Obituary for Carl W. "Colorado Carl" Moberg
CARL W. MOBERG 12/16/1935 – 8/16/2020
Winfred Valentine Barrett II was born on December 16, 1935, on the family farm in Granite Springs, Somers, NY. He was the youngest child of Winfred Valentine Barrett and Ophelia Lucy Smith. His father died, followed by his mother in 1937. His two sisters and older brother (all deceased) were adopted or taken in by family. Walter Moberg and Mildred Kelley of Patterson, NY, adopted the toddler and named him Carl W. Moberg.
Carl graduated from North Salem High School in 1954. He worked for Pawling Rubber Company, Eaton Kelley Company and as a rural letter carrier for the Patterson Post Office before building “Carl’s Lawn Service”, a successful landscape business. During the winter months he used his passion for skiing to become a ski instructor with the Professional Ski Instructors of America. He was ski school director at Mt. Storm, Otis Ridge and Vernon Valley, but most will remember him as the ski school director at Big Birch in Patterson. His sons took over his landscape business and he continued to teach skiing at Copper Mountain, Colorado until 2006. Family and friends enjoyed many ski trips out west with “Colorado Carl”. In 2013 PSIA recognized him for his five decades of membership in the organization.
An avid golfer, he played in a league at the Dutcher Golf Course in Pawling and enjoyed fishing trips to Canada. He met his devoted wife Judy Kelley, in the Presbyterian Church in Patterson where they both served as elders. They married in 1996 and spent many happy years exploring the canyons out west and sharing vacations with their grandchildren in the Adirondacks and on Cape Cod. He leaves his three children, Carl Jeffrey Moberg, Wendy Chadnick and Scott Moberg as well as three step sons Brian Kelley, Peter Kelley and Robert Kelley and nineteen grandchildren.
Carl was 84, a quiet man with a ready smile and a twinkle in his eye, a hard worker and an athelete who loved the Lord, his wife, his family, his dog, the sun, the water and the high places.
