Obituary for Doreen F. Von Essen (McSpedon)

Doreen F. Von Essen went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 8. 2021. She was 72 years old.

Born on October 18, 1948 in Yonkers, NY, daughter of the late George D. and Mary (Fennessy) McSpedon.

Doreen was the Director of Mobile Relief with PARC in Brewster, NY for 10 years, retiring in 2002. Growing up in Carmel, Doreen graduated from Carmel High School and later lived in Stormville for a time before calling Poughquag her home since 2003.

Doreen married the love of her life, John F. Von Essen on October 9, 1969 in Las Vegas, NV. John died on February 5, 2014.

Doreen and John belonged to the Full Gospel Center in LaGrange, NY. Through the years, they serviced the hungry in Poughkeepsie and in Santo Domingo, as well as, financing and overseeing the construction of a church in Las Caobas, Santo Domingo through John’s ministry Jehova Proveera Ministries Inc.

Throughout her life, Doreen enjoyed taking part in different sports including bowling and softball, where she had coached as well. She was an avid gardener and folks thought of her as the ‘mother of the neighborhood’. This neighborhood feel was very special to Doreen, but the center of her universe was her family.

She leaves behind her siblings Christine Brown and George McSepdon and his wife Ellen, 2 daughters, Angela Von Essen, Jacqueline Brown, 6 grandchildren, Destiny Von Essen, Mia Suppa, Ariela, Carlos, Noah, and Elijah Brown. A great grandson, Jonathan Donohue, As well as many other nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Walter T. McSpedon on January 3, 2020.

Please join us as we celebrate the life of Doreen F. Von Essen. The Service will be held Saturday, May 1st at Full Gospel Center located at 1138 Route 55, Lagrangeville, NY 12540. Doors will open at 2pm. Service will begin at 2:45pm. Please join us afterwards for refreshments. All are welcome!
