Obituary for Gerald W. Smith

Gerald W. Smith, of Holmes, NY, died peacefully with his family by his side on November 3, 2021. He was 85 years old.
Mr. Smith was born on September 20, 1936, in East Fishkill, NY to Mabel (Sprague) and Watson Smith. He graduated from Carmel High School in 1956 and married the love of his life, Betty Lou Hyatt on August 10, 1958, at the Kent Baptist Church in Luddingtonville, NY.
Gerald worked for the Carmel Central School District, for over 20 years in several different capacities, including as a bus driver, but he was most proud of being the groundskeeper for the district. Upon his retirement in 1991, he created many happy memories in his vacation home in Wyalusing, PA.
He was president of the Russel-Mead Cemetery in Kent Cliffs, a member of the Second Kent Baptist Church, enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was a life member of the Stormville Fire Department.
Gerald is survived by his wife, Betty Lou, his children, Geraldine Wood of Lake Katrine, NY,
G. Watson Smith Jr. of Stormville, NY, Marilyn O’Dell of Wyalusing, PA, and Abel Smith of Holmes, NY. He will also be missed by 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, as well as his sister, Shirley Smith of Holmes NY. Gerald was predeceased by his daughter, Laura in 1979 as well as his sister, Ruth Austin of Lake Carmel, NY.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 6, 2021, at 11 am at Dwyer Funeral Home, 23 South Street, Patterson, NY. Interment will follow at Russel-Mead Cemetery in Kent Cliffs, NY.
