Obituary for Melissa G. Morrissey

Melissa Gene Morrissey, a lifelong resident of Patterson, NY, passed away on Thursday, May 25, 2023. She was a loving and devoted mother, sister, and friend.

Melissa was born on December 4, 1976, in Danbury, CT, daughter of the late John & Sandra (DeStefano) Morrissey. Melissa was known for her kind, thoughtful, and loving nature, which she shared generously with those around her. Melissa was a 1995 graduate of Carmel High School and received an Associate’s Degree from Westchester Community College, where she pursued her passion for learning and personal growth.

She possessed a love of fish aquariums and the many related species of fish. It was not surprising that Melissa enjoyed working at Petland in Danbury, CT. Later she worked as a Traffic Flagger for Central Hudson throughout the Hudson Valley area, where she was a dedicated and valued employee. Her strong work ethic and commitment to her community were evident in her professional life, as well as her involvement in various associations. Melissa enjoyed attending concerts and playing softball as a young lady while in both her teenage and college years and was an avid fan of the New York Yankees, simply enjoying the game. Her love for sports was matched only by her passion for music, particularly playing the drums. Melissa never missed an opportunity to visit the beach, especially Lloyd’s Beach in Little Crompton, RI, where she visited her grandfather’s (John Morrissey Sr.) lighthouse. Mr. Morrissey had been the lighthouse’s keeper when it was being used.

Melissa met her Partner Lucas Rhoades in Poughkeepsie, NY. She loved Lucas deeply and together brought forth a son, Luke, the center of their lives.

Family was at the heart of Melissa's life, as she had a profound love and appreciation for her loved ones. She was a devoted mother to her son, Luke and a caring sister to her brother, Leonard Maietta, and sister-in-law, Debra Maietta. Melissa was also a beloved aunt to Marissa Maietta, Caitlin (Rolando) Zapata, and Gianna Nassani and her fiancé Dillan Turner. Her Aunt Donna Bell and cousins Stephanie Bell and Christopher (Julie) Bell and their children Andrew and Sam.

Melissa lovingly looked after her mom, providing comfort and support during her mother’s final years. Melissa's kindness and thoughtfulness extended beyond her family, touching the lives of her mother’s friends and acquaintances. She had a unique ability to make those around her feel loved and valued, and her warm presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her. As we remember Melissa, we celebrate her life and the lasting impact she had on those around her. Her legacy of love, kindness, and devotion to her family will live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind.

On Thursday, June 8, 2023 friends and family may call at the Dwyer Funeral Home, 23 South Street, Patterson, NY from 6 to 8pm. A service of prayer will be held at 7:30pm. Contributions in Melissa’s memory may be made to people-usa.org
